An Introduction to Vinyl and Laminate Flooring

Many homes across the UK now have at least one room that features a vinyl or laminate floor. It’s become a popular, modern trend for homeowners due to their versatility and price. With their growing popularity, they now come in a wide range of patterns including more traditional looks that realistically mimic wood in various colours as well as more striking patterns such as marble and geometrics. Whilst the trend once began in kitchens and bathrooms due to them being areas where moisture and stains were a concern, it has now moved on to be a great choice for living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms!

The Benefits

Vinyl and laminate flooring, particularly in classic looks such as wood and stone have great longevity and are considered a timeless trend. That means if you install it into your home and decide to redecorate, it’s still very likely to work with the rest of your decor and be on-trend and fresh. Many ranges are also waterproof or at least water-resistant and stain-proof making them great for families with young children and pets. Luxury vinyl flooring also has the added benefit of being a bit thicker and more rigid with more layers to make it longer lasting. If you are willing to pay a little extra we recommend going for the luxury ranges. As laminate and vinyl are so hard-wearing they can be used in high traffic areas too and are anti-dust, which can be good for allergy sufferers.

Laminate

Laminate is different from vinyl in that it tends to have a thicker composition making it great for dining and living rooms. It also can look slightly more realistic than vinyl but both are great options to create different flooring effects without using wood. Quick-Step Floor Designers have a beautiful range of laminate flooring which is water-resistant and compatible with underfloor heating. They come with scratch guard technology which is perfect for pet paws and are eco friendly! We particularly like their Soft Oak Light colour for a classy, versatile floor whilst their Classic Oak Natural shade is a go-to for kitchens and dining rooms as it is slightly darker and more realistic in colour.

LVT and Vinyl

If you are looking for something less hard underfoot, quieter and warmer, vinyl flooring could be a great alternative to laminate. Camaro flooring does a superb range of vinyl floors in some striking colours. Their stylish Polyflor Atlantic Slate vinyl is so striking, making it perfect for kitchens, hallways and bathrooms but if you are looking for something a bit more contemporary the Burnished Concrete floor is great for living rooms and looks perfect when paired with muted wall colours and wooden furniture.

Patterns

In one of our previous blogs, we touched on the pattern trend and there is certainly no shortage of styles you can get in Vinyl flooring. The Woven collection from Karndean Design Flooring is a bold interlocking vinyl floor that utilises subtle colours making it a unique flooring choice to enhance areas surrounding staircases.  If you want to go even bolder, the Heritage and Montpellier collections create opulent focus points in any room with their intricate patterns and detail which work well with-classical styled interiors.
