The Best Pet-friendly Flooring

This month is national pet month! In the UK an estimated 12 million of us have a furry friend as part of the family. Whilst they bring lots of joy to our lives we have to be careful with our flooring choices when it comes to pets. Whether it's carpets or laminate flooring you are after there are some great options out there to make your life much easier so you don't have to worry about spending so much time, effort and money cleaning up after your pets.

When it comes to pet-friendly carpets it's best to opt for carpets that are easy to clean and use a synthetic alternative such as polypropylene and carpets that carry some sort of stain-free guarantee. You'll also want to look out for a cut pile carpet and not a loop pile as these can get caught on claws! Most pet owners think that laminate flooring is the best choice for pets however they can be slippery, especially for older or larger dogs but tend to be easier to clean than carpet so it's all about finding flooring that is up to the job and is the right fit for the whole family regardless of it being laminate or carpet!

Laminate

We stock two big players in the pet-friendly laminate flooring market to suit most budgets. By far one of the most popular we love is the laminate range from Quick-Step. This fantastic flooring is waterproof due to its water repellant Hydroseal coating as well as stain-resistant making them so easy to clean. An added bonus is that their range is also scratch-resistant with a scratch guard making up the top layer making them ten times more resistant to scratches from your pet's claws!

What's more, they are made with noise in mind and are designed in such a way that the noise of people walking and pets are minimised so when your new puppy starts doing laps around the dining room table it's not quite as loud!  The range also comes with a warranty of up to 25 years. Combining a surprisingly soft, warm feel underfoot with an attractive price tag they come in a range of shades so you can have the wooden flooring feel without all the upkeep that comes with using traditional wood flooring.

The second range we stock is from Karndean flooring. Experts in their trade these fabulous laminate ranges are designed to keep up with muddy paw prints and household accidents and are even designed with pets in mind. Their flooring uses their own patented K-Guard+ which provides a hygienic and durable finish on the surface and protects from deeper scratches. If you are worried about your pet potentially slipping over on a laminate floor they also offer textured laminate to provide some extra traction. If you are looking for an alternative look to the wood they also come in some more abstract styles as well as stone look laminate flooring.

Carpet

If you prefer your home to be carpeted then there are still some great options that are pet friendly and low maintenance. We love the Stainfree collection from Abingdon Flooring which uses a well researched no-stain technology that is designed to prevent spillages from entering the pile fibre so that quick cleaning can remove the spills before they stain. The range comes in over 200 shades and 18 different styles so there is something for every home and taste.

We also love the Easy Clean ranges from Cormar Carpet company which comes with a 10-year stain and wear guarantee.  These luxurious carpets are soft enough to play on yet durable enough to cope with the busy family lifestyle as well as kids and pets. The Primo Plus is a particularly robust carpet as it features an easy-clean twist that is stain resistant and bleach cleanable and is made from 100% Excellon polypropylene combining all the benefits of a traditional carpet with easy cleaning properties.

Keeping your carpet clean

To keep on top of pet dander and fur you need to make sure you are vacuuming regularly and in an ideal world twice a week. It's best to go for a slightly darker carpet to hide any marks too if you can but avoid going too dark as this will show dust and hair easily especially if you have a white-furred animal roaming the house. Keeping your pet's nails short can also avoid unwanted snags. If you want to read more about how to get rid of stains and spillages from your carpet check out our last blog here
