Questions to Consider When Buying a Carpet

Buying a new carpet can be daunting and you need to be sure you are making the right choice when speaking to suppliers and fitters. With this in mind, we have put together a list of some of the top questions to consider when buying a carpet!

How much carpet do you need to order?

Looking for a carpet for your whole home? Or just need it for one room? These are important things to consider when looking into ordering a carpet. Whilst doing several rooms may be more expensive overall, you can sometimes get a good deal on fitting and discounts for larger orders of carpet, so it's worth considering if you are planning to do a few rooms.

Of course, it's not always needed and sometimes impractical to try and do the whole house in a limited time frame so there are circumstances where only a single room needs a new carpet. It’s certainly worth having a quick measure of the room in question to get an idea!

You can do this by measuring the length and width of the room and multiplying them to get your square footage. However, to ensure there are no hiccups, we advise you get a professional carpet fitter, like ourselves, to measure for you - knowing how much carpet you need leads to our next question to think about when purchasing a new carpet.

What is Your Budget?

It’s worthwhile to do a bit of research prior to buying a new carpet, look at suppliers and costs in particular. Some vendors will only offer the carpet and then require you to go through all the busy work of finding a reliable tradesperson to fit it whereas we source and fit carpets in one! By doing your research you have a general idea of what it is going to cost and can adjust your budget accordingly.

It’s no good plucking an arbitrary figure that's nowhere close to what you require for the carpet you have in mind or the number of rooms you want to do. That’s why we also offer a free measuring and estimate service, so we can be transparent in what we can offer you whilst offering a solution for any budget.

What kind of wear will your new carpet get?

Depending on which room you are installing a new carpet in, the level of traffic it will get can affect the type of carpet you should go for. High traffic areas such as lounges will require a much harder wearing carpet and not doing your research could result in your carpet wearing down quickly and not standing the test of time.

Equally important is if you have children and pets, as you will require a stain-resistant, easy to clean carpet in these cases whereas looped carpets can easily catch and snag from pet claws. Lower pile cut carpets are also more hardwearing than high pile looser, looped carpets.

It's also worth noting wool carpets are now often made to be moth resistant and harder wearing but you are still better looking at synthetic carpets such as nylon and polypropylene if you have a busy household. You want your investment to last, otherwise, your new carpet could be a costly mistake.

Don’t forget about the underlay!

So you've decided on your perfect carpet but to really get the best out of it you need to pair it with a good underlay. It’s a good idea not to scrimp on a quality underlay as it has a whole host of benefits including noise insulation, moisture protection and provides insulation against the cold so your carpet is toasty in the colder winter months.

Carpets fitted with a thick underlay tend to feel better underfoot too. Just because you can’t see it doesn't mean it's not important! If you want a level carpet that lasts longer, you need underlay. With over 30 years of experience, we can help pair the best underlay with your carpet and fit it for you.
