How to Style Your Carpet to Make Your Room Look Bigger

Open plan living and spacious airy rooms are becoming all the rage now, but what if you have a room that's on the small side? You can actually give the illusion of a bright, large space by being savvy with your carpet choices, giving that small box room a refreshed feel.

Styling Tips

When styling your room get creative! Arrange your furniture in a simple, yet functional way and look to install ceiling lighting instead of cluttering with several floor lamps and tables. Try to keep natural light sources unobstructed too as natural lighting gives not only makes the room airier but can actually improve your wellbeing and mood!

Avoid heavy, dark curtains and add small accents and accessories to the room to keep your own individual style instead of loud statement pieces. Mirrors can also create illusions of a bigger area and often creating a centre focal point can trick the eye into thinking a room is larger than it actually is.

In terms of paint, you want to stay lighter where possible. Keeping your coving and trim a light colour or even the same colour as your walls adds to the expanding feeling. If you want to try using a dark colour try to keep it to one wall or balance it out with lighter furniture and accessories.

Carpet Choices

When it comes to carpets to make a room look bigger the first thing to remember is you want your carpet to be installed wall to wall.  This creates an ongoing feel and doesn't draw the eye to a place it stops thus making it feel like the room stretches out further.

You also want to keep in mind the type of carpet pile which all depends on the traffic your room is getting. Higher traffic areas need a more durable and lower pile. If you are a busy family or have pets then you'll also be wanting an easy-to-clean carpet! Don’t let your efforts to make the room more spacious blindside you to specific flooring needs.

It’s also worth noting that if you currently have laminate installed and want to opt for a rug instead ensure this is large enough to fit any of the room furniture on top to avoid the room feeling cluttered and boxed in.

Colour

To give the room a bigger feel colour is so important. You will want to install a light coloured carpet as opposed to a darker or bolder carpet. Fonrutnaley there is now a huge choice in more muted carpet colours from light pastel colours to stunning neutrals. Lighter carpets also reflect light more giving a more natural bright look to the room.

If you are looking at a patterned carpet things can get a little more complicated as with a smaller room you want to keep the pattern smaller but this is dependent on the amount of furniture you have in said room. If you are going minimalist with your decor you can get away with a bigger pattern.
