How having a carpet could reduce your energy costs

Energy bills are at an all-time high at the moment as many of us know. With many households facing a 54% increase since April and no signs of these annual costs easing many of us are looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and bills. There are several ways to reduce bills throughout the home and flooring is one of them. If you have found yourself needing to update your old, damaged or faded flooring it's worth thinking smartly about your next installation.

How can carpets help?

It is a known fact that hard flooring is less energy-efficient and when it comes down to it, carpet is the much better option to help reduce your bills. What's more, carpets are installed with a subfloor otherwise known as underlay which helps insulate your flooring even more.

Using carpet as your primary form of flooring makes it harder for heat to escape, meaning less energy is needed to keep your home warm. Carpeting your most frequently used areas such as lounges and bedrooms can be a great place to start. You'll see these benefits from the day you fit a carpet and they will quickly offset the cost of the carpet itself.

What if I don't have carpets and don't want new flooring?

We know due to the cost of living prices laying carpets down is not an option for many people. A good quality rug could be a short term solution for many and most well-known carpet brands offer their own ranges of rugs too. We offer several different rugs from a range of brands and are more than happy to discuss your requirements and help you find the best solution for your home. Not only this but rugs can also help an old wooden floor feel nicer underfoot and much warmer as well as reduce the noise made while walking.

I still feel laminate or wood flooring is the better option for my home

If you are still sold on having beautiful wood flooring or laminate there are still a few things you can do to make them as energy-efficient as possible. More general solutions include draft proofing your home using draft excluders on your doors and proofing your windows, skirting boards and chimneys where possible.

When it comes to your actual flooring you can install insulation under wooden and laminate floors too. It’s best to speak to your local professional carpet fitters who can best advise you on appropriate insulation and how it will work for your type of flooring. Wooden floors need to be able to expand so there are some slight limits to what you can and can't do and why it's best to get a professional opinion. You also want to make sure that whoever fits your flooring knows what they are doing - laminate and wooden flooring require much more care when fitting to ensure there are no gaping gaps left.
