Don't make these mistakes when buying carpets

We all want to get the very best out of our flooring and want to be pleased with our purchases for years to come. However, sometimes we start to have regrets and doubts about the flooring that was ultimately installed. Being aware of some of the most common regrets when it comes to flooring could help you avoid making these sometimes costly mistakes in the future!

The wrong type of carpet

One of the most common initial regrets. You went for the flooring with a deep pile so you could have a luxurious feel underfoot, but now the cat is nicking all the fibres or the dog has stained it and you are finding it difficult to clean. Or maybe you went for the easy clean option and are missing that softer feel underfoot?

When it comes to choosing your carpet you need to do your research, pop to a shop or order some samples before committing. Different carpet types have different uses and what works for one household may not work for another. It also depends on the area you are carpeting too, as high-traffic areas like lounges will need more durable carpets whilst areas that see less footfall can get away with deeper piles and less durable materials.

You need to be able to strike a balance between comfort and practicality. Most modern carpets these days have the ability to sit somewhere in that sweet spot as they combine softer feels with shorter fibres so you can have the best of both worlds.

You needn’t automatically opt for the pricier options too, as these often use those more expensive materials that stain more easily but equally don't settle for a cheap carpet that will not stand the test of time. Manmade carpets are a little more versatile too than natural, but natural carpets can in some cases reduce air pollutants in the home and are non-toxic making them great for those with allergies. Whatever you choose stick to a budget, know your needs and do your research and you will be just fine!

Didn’t like the colour

Choosing a carpet colour can be tricky, especially if you are a family and find it hard to agree on the same colour choice. A lot of people are very set in the colour they want or like and disregard how the colour will wear over time. Over time dark carpets can fade, making them unsuitable for areas with lots of light like conservatories.

Lighter carpets however can more easily show dirt and grime. Going for more bold carpets is a great way to add character to the home, but if you are one for changing your decor or wall colour frequently then you'll need to think about how much a bold carpet might clash in the future.

Colour doesn't just relate to wear though, and lighter colours can give a more open, bright feel to a home, whereas darker colours can give more of a contrast or a cosy feel to larger rooms.

Choosing your carpet colour is another key decision in the process of buying a new carpet. It can be one of the hardest to visualise though and colours can differ from what you see online and in person - much like paint! We always recommend popping into the store to have a look at samples and some ranges do offer a virtual ‘try on’ to see what your rooms could look like with said carpet. The main thing is to have a good look and ponder over the samples for a couple of days instead of rushing into making a decision.

Poor installation

Many people often don’t do their research when it comes to tradespeople either! Ensuring you employ a professional who knows what they are doing and can further advise you on the type of carpet and underlay required is the best course of action.

Quickly laying down carpets with no underlay or care can result in carpets quickly lifting or rippling and breaking down very quickly. Make sure you check out reviews and checkatrade scores where possible and getting an endorsement by someone you know personally can also give some extra peace of mind.

We have over 30 years of experience in the trade and can ensure your carpet is fitted perfectly as well as offer advice and support on how to take care of your carpet to ensure it lasts.

Hopefully, this has given you some advice on how to make the most of your carpet purchase and avoid any costly regrets during the process! As always if you need any help or advice please do not hesitate to get in touch.
